SAS Global Forum 2009 – It’s a wrap

As I am typing this I am back home again in the Netherlands and the SAS Global Forum 2009 is history. As such this will be my last and concluding post on this topic.

After the “Kick Back Party” on Tuesday night, which was well visited and — IMHO — a great success, the final day I visited a few presentations and used the time to say goodbye to new people I have met, pack my bags and prepare for the trip back home.

Kick Back Party SGF2009

So, what is my final conclusion on SGF09? For me it was a succesful and useful visit. Main reasons for this being:

  • I had a chance to meet people that I either had followed on twitter for a while or that have given presentations that impressed me
  • I have seen new possibilities with the software and improvements that were made to the SAS 9.2 release and related products and solutions
  • I have heard about new trends and visions which made me rethink about current concepts and ideas related to my daily work

Particularly the latter is something that I believe is valuable. Sometimes you tend to get stuck in the ways you perform your work. Hearing different visions and concepts, new ideas and trends makes you reconsider and back “on the edge”.

Concepts and trends that I will need to look into are “Analytics versus intelligence” (although terminology can be a subject of “discussion” as can be read on the blog of Peter Thomas), the rise of the Num3rati (Stephen Baker was one of the speakers during the opening session) and the need to try and think “outside the box”. Particularly in the reporting area there are many new ideas and possibilities. For example, why not consider adding a rating to a report (like is done also with videos on YouTube) or indicate which other reports others have viewed that have looked at this report as well (similar to what Amazon.com does with books).

All in all, it’s a wrap. Thanks to everyone who made the SGF09 possible and a special thanks to Bart Heinsius from EOM Data Solutions BV who made this trip possible.
